Sombren is a Nord and one of the Four Ambitions, the mortals that received a portion of Mehrunes Dagon's power as part of his plan to merge Nirn with the Deadlands. Similar to Calia and Destron, two other Ambitions, he had been raised in a Doomvault but was freed by the troops of Varen Aquilarios during Varen's rebellion. Outside the Doomvault, Sombren struggled to control his Ambition powers but was soon found by the Dremora Xynaa who became his mentor and taught him how to do it.
